A brand-new “ballet” no one needs

Choreographer Dimitris Mytilinaios, together with his company, is touring this year with his latest performance, REDUNDANCes. Continuing his experimentation with rearticulating the codes of the classical ballet stage, the choreography unfolds as a choreographic collage of adapted classical variations.

The title oscillates between “redundant dances” and “redundancies of dance,” pointing to both “unnecessary dances” and “the redundancies of dance,” while sarcastically touching on the debate around utilitarian and “useful” art, as well as the tendency to assign symbolic meaning and narrative connections between artworks and contemporary life. At the same time, the concept refers both to the feeling that doing something more difficult (in this case, dancing) is unnecessary, and to the difficulty of feeling that what you do is unnecessary.

Composer Andys Skordis reorchestrates the orchestral excerpts, presenting them in percussive versions. Faithfully preserving the original scores, the group of dancers is tested through all combinations (solos, duets, trios, quartets, and quintets), guided by an ostensibly constructed libretto from which the roles emerge: the Prince, the Nanny, the Cook, the King of the Upper Land, and the Princess of the Upper Land.

The performance includes excerpts from: Études, The Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, Sylvia, Swan Lake, La Sylphide, Petrushka, Laurencia, Giselle, Diana and Actaeon, Romeo and Juliet, and The Story of Manon.
