MANDRAGORAS by Niccolo Machiavelli
MANDRAGORAS by Niccolo Machiavelli – By the “ATAKA” Theater Group
The work MANDRAGORAS was written in 1518, five years after HEGEMON, when Machiavelli
was living in exile and his thinking was influenced by discussions with a group of humanists.
The special nature of this deeply political work is hidden behind the satire, through which
the corruption and dishonesty of the establishment, the Church, public officials and
ultimately the fall of moral and political principles are presented. At the same time though, it
is a happy comedy, full of surprises and twists, where nothing is as it first seems. With his
all-powerful weapons of humor and satire, Machiavelli wanted with MANDRAGORAS
to deplore the troubles of his time as well as the future ones, exposing to public
criticism the “end that justifies the means”.
It is a story with great depth, many allegories and parallels between yesterday and
today. It is a nice comedy and at the same time, a play with interesting symbolism.
Scene by scene, Machiavelli presents generalized corruption, the plight of women,
the collapse of institutions and religion. And all this, while writing a pleasant
comedy, full of surprises and twists, where ……. nothing is as it first seems.
