Christ Recrucified

Τhe Theatrical and Cultural Club Apollon presents the play “Christ Recrucified” the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis in a theatrical adaptation by Gerasimos Stavros and Notis Pergialis.

Plot of the play
In Lykovrisi, a Greek village in the East, there is a custom of re-enacting the Passions of Christ every seven years. The village’s elders and its priest Father Gregory select the persons who will take part:
Christ will be played by Manolios, a simple shepherd; John, by Michelis, the son of the lord Patriarch; Judas, by Panagiotaros; Magdalene, by the widow Katerina.

Late in the afternoon, refugees arrive from another village, pursued by the Turks. They seek help, but Father Gregory turns them away, saying that they they were infected with cholera. The refugees, led by Father Fotis, take refuge in the wild mountain of Sarakina. They are aided only by Manolios, Michelis, Katerina, Giannakos and Constantis (the latter two were to play the apostles Peter and
James).

After being cast in the role of Christ, Manolios changes day by day. He divorces his fiancée and decides to reach as much spiritual, mental and physical purity as possible, guided by Father Fotis.
Moreover, he defends the refugees and speaks about the value of love and mercy, provoking the reaction of his fellow villagers and the wrath of Father Gregory.

Meanwhile, the Patriarch dies and his son Michelis decides to distribute his possessions among the refugees. When they come to Lykovrisi to receive the estates, Father Gregory declares Michelis deranged and stirs up the locals. After the violent death of his brother during the conflict that follows, Father Gregory points out Manolios to the Ottoman commander Aghas, as the one responsible for all their misfortunes. He succeeds in convicting him and handing him over to the enraged villagers. The fanatical crowd gathers in the church, where Father Gregory excommunicates Manolios and gives the order to the faithful to execute him within the holy place.
