International Classical Music Festival- Syrreo
The International Classical Music Festival, now under the auspices of UNESCO and henceforth known as the “SYRREO MUSIC FESTIVAL”, is a brilliant cultural event with a legacy of three decades, celebrating excellence in the arts — where else but in Syros, the island that was the first to “welcome” Europe into the newly established Greek State.
Thanks to the 20-year contribution of its President, Fotis Karagiannopoulos, the Festival has been revitalized and now impressively celebrates both contemporary European culture and our heritage. Nikolas Kavakos, the new Artistic Director, brings sensitivity and artistic vision to the program, while Dimitris Platanias, in charge of lyrical singing, adds the golden touch of the international operatic scene.
In addition to milestone concerts, the program includes a surprise performance by internationally acclaimed guitarist Kostas Kotsiolis, and a free educational concert for children by the renowned EL Sistema Greece, in collaboration with the musical ensemble L’Arco Sonoro.
Sunday 17/08
Chamber Music Concert with Leonidas Kavakos
Leonidas Kavakos, violin
Ilias Livieratos, viola
Timotheos Gavriilidis Petrin, cello
Alexia Mouza Arenas, piano
Leonidas Kavakos, one of the world’s leading violinists, began studying the violin with his father, Konstantinos Kavakos, and continued at the Hellenic Conservatory with Stelios Kafantaris. With an Onassis Foundation scholarship, he pursued further studies at Indiana University under Josef Gingold. He made his debut at the Herodium in 1984 and internationally with orchestras such as the Vienna, Berlin, and New York Philharmonics.
As a conductor, he has led ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. He has received awards at the Sibelius (1985), Paganini (1988), and Sonning (2017) competitions.
He performs on the 1734 “Willemotte” Antonio Stradivarius violin, a symbol of his musical excellence. Together with his ensemble of top string virtuosos—Alexandros Sakarellos (violin), Ilias Livieratos (viola), Timotheos Gavriilidis-Petrin (cello), and Michalis Semsis (double bass)—he brings the “SYRREO” International Festival to a triumphant close with masterpieces of classical music.
