GEORG BENDA: MEDEA
Between Reason and Madness
Actress Karyofyllia Karabeti and conductor Markellos Chrysikopoulos perform the work of Czech composer Georg Anton Benda (1722–1795) “Medea,” with a libretto by German poet and playwright Friedrich Wilhelm Gotter, and a Greek translation by Giannis Kallifatidi.
“Medea” is one of the works that quickly gained great success, which is why, following the customs of the time, several different transcriptions were made almost simultaneously, so that the composition could become “accessible” to a wide segment of the music-loving public.
In the performance in Syros, the version for piano (Leipzig, 1778) will be presented, performed by Markellos Chrysikopoulos. All six speaking characters of the work—the Medea, Jason, their two children, the Tutor, and an Attendant—will be interpreted by Karyofyllia Karabeti.
Beloved actor Giorgos Michalakis will read the message by Theodoros Terzopoulos for World Theatre Day.
