Loukoumi in a Jar
Memory, Sweetness, and Homeland in a Jar of the Soul
The Municipality of Syros–Ermoupolis and the Association of Asia Minor Greeks of Ermoupolis invite you into the world of Loukoumi in a Jar by Eirini F. Koutsafti, directed by Vasilis Eutaxopoulos. At the center of the stage stands Despina, a woman from Asia Minor, portrayed by Mary Igglesi—a woman carrying the sweetness and memory of a piece of Loukoumi. A fighter in life, she remembers, sings, and dances, leading the audience through moments of both emotion and joy.
Starting from Smyrna, the performance embraces those nostalgic for their homeland and childhood home, wherever they may be. With live music from the santouri played by Christina Kouki and Penny Georgopoulou, the production illuminates memory with laughter, song, profound human tenderness, and a collective theatrical experience.
