The chair
The theatrical performance, created as a tribute for the celebration of Ermoupolis’ 200th anniversary, sheds light—through a deeply moving and human lens—on the lesser-known side of the city’s history: its memories, its silences, and above all, the women who supported and shaped it.
With a central symbol—a simple chair, sometimes occupied, sometimes empty, yet never forgotten—a journey across two centuries unfolds. The chair becomes a witness to time and a vessel of memory, guiding the audience through six acts that tell the stories of everyday people who left their mark on the city’s course.
At the heart of the performance lies the figure of the mother. Mothers who were uprooted, who fled and traveled in search of safety, who built new lives from nothing. Mothers who worked tirelessly, who raised children under harsh conditions, who endured loss, hunger, and separation. Through these figures emerges the invisible strength that kept the city alive.
Ermoupolis is presented not only as a historical place, but as a great “mother” herself—embracing refugees, protecting dreams, and becoming a point of reference for generations. A city built on hard work, love, and solidarity.
The performance stands as a tribute to all the women who passed through this land and left their imprint, as well as a moving homage to the timeless value of maternal love. At the same time, it forms part of the celebrations for the city’s 200th anniversary, highlighting collective memory and the foundations upon which it was built.
On the occasion of Mother’s Day, the play becomes a heartfelt bow, a “thank you,” and a reminder that the most powerful force in the world remains a mother’s love. It is a performance that brings stories to life through glances, silences, and emotions, inviting the audience to recognize their own personal memories within these figures.
